A bird of grassland and wetland edges that weaves hanging nests from plant fibres.
Breeding males develop yellow on the head and breast. Females and males outside the breeding season are pale buff with streaked plumage.
Baya Weaver nests in Selangor and Perlis, Malaysia, differed in shape and in the trees supporting them. Among 66 completed nests in 22 colonies, supporting trunks averaged 58.8 cm in Selangor and 18.3 cm in Perlis. Nests averaged 3.4 m above ground in Selangor and 2.8 m in Perlis. Males build partly formed helmet-shaped nests, from which females select and finish nests for breeding.
Temperature and humidity inside the nests were linked with nest length and the length of the entrance tube. Longer entrances and nests tended to have cooler interiors. Nest structure and supporting trees help shape the small-scale climate inside a Baya Weaver nest.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
In Selangor and Perlis, nest trees, nest structure and interior climate differed. Retaining nesting trees and plant materials supports Baya Weaver nest building.
