This partridge is known from the mountains of Borneo. A 2023 review of specimen records recognized three confirmed localities and eight specimens, with the last record in 1902.
The 2023 review describes adult males as having a white belly, a broader grey breast band, and no buff patch on the wing-coverts.
Dulit Partridges are birds of Borneo’s highlands. Adult males have white bellies and broad grey breast bands. They differ from Long-billed Partridges in belly, breast and wing colour, lacking that species’ buff wing-covert patch.
A 2023 study compared museum labels with historical literature. One male, collected by Charles Hose in April 1902, had a newer label naming the broad Baram district. Its original label was more precise, specifying Murud mountain at 4,000 feet.
Hose’s own 1900 map provided another clue. Its Batu Murud refers to Murud Kecil, a smaller mountain approximately 80 kilometres southwest of present-day Mt Murud. The authors considered this river-accessible mountain the more likely collecting locality. Re-examining one old name changed their proposed search location.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
The 2023 authors urged searches in poorly surveyed highlands, especially away from settlements. Establishing occupied sites is necessary to investigate population size and trends. Reassessing historical collecting localities can help guide field searches.
