The Masked Finch lives in grassy areas and near water in northern Australia. Its heavy yellow bill and black facial markings are distinctive.
Adults have a heavy yellow bill; a black mask, chin, tail, and flank band; a buff breast; a white rump; and red legs. Subspecies personata has buff ear-coverts and lower flanks, while leucotis has white ones.
It forages on the ground in small flocks and may gather at water in the morning and evening. It eats fallen grass seeds.
