This relatively uncommon shrew inhabits forests in the Pacific Northwest. It has been recorded in several forest successional stages and in clearcuts when nearby forest remains and trees are allowed to regrow.
The dorsal fur ranges from medium brown to dark brown. The study also used head-body and skull measurements to distinguish it from similar shrews.
