This large Japanese endemic rodent occurs on Amami-Oshima, Tokunoshima, and Okinawa Island. The University of Tokyo Museum account notes that its tail is longer than its body.
Its coat ranges from brown to dark brown. Long bristles grow along the back, and about the final third of its thick tail is white.
It lives in trees, runs along trunks and branches, nests in large tree hollows, and eats nuts, according to the museum account.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
