This owl occurs on Alor and Pantar in the Lesser Sunda Islands. It was formerly treated as a subspecies of Ninox novaeseelandiae, but a study using vocal and DNA evidence supports treating it as a separate species.
The historical specimen description notes brown upperparts with white and pale-brown spots, streaks on the breast, rounded markings below, and clearer bars on the tail.
Surveys on Alor and Pantar recorded calls in forest and eucalypt woodland at several elevations. Comparisons of vocalizations and multiple genes support treating the island birds as one distinct species.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
