Males have a reddish-buff crest and a black stripe from the throat toward the breast. The crest becomes conspicuous during courtship. Females are sandier, with a barred neck and no black stripe.
It is active on the ground by day and also eats plant seeds. Bustards bathe in dust to maintain their plumage.
During courtship, the male calls loudly, flies upwards, turns over in the air and descends with its wings spread.
Both males and females have a black belly.
