It has a long, slightly decurved bill. Its upperparts are dark brown in the south and redder in the north, with darker streaking that is stronger in the south; the underparts are whitish with dark streaks on the breast.
It uses semi-arid shrubland and grassy shrubland, usually in rocky or stony areas. It is usually alone or in pairs and forages on the ground for invertebrates and seeds; it also eats fruit and small corms. Males sing from perches, the ground and during aerial displays.
