This rare, terrestrial cuckoo inhabits rainforest between the Xingu and Tapajós rivers in Brazil. Its behavior is still poorly known.
Specimen comparisons describe a rudimentary breast band and unmarked cinnamon-buff ear-coverts and malar region. These traits were used to distinguish the studied N. squamiger specimens from related populations.
It inhabits humid lowland and preserved rainforest and runs on the forest floor. One 2013 observation reported a bird beside a foraging herd of white-lipped peccaries; other behavior remains little known.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
