This kingfisher breeds on islands southeast of New Guinea, including the Louisiade and D'Entrecasteaux groups.
Compared with a close kingfisher relative, it has brighter blue-green upperparts and is reported to have up to about 60% less body mass.
On small islands in the D'Entrecasteaux and Louisiade Archipelagos, it is associated with forest edges. The study describes these populations as T. chloris colonus.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
