This burrowing mouse is known only from Mount Caparaó in southeastern Brazil. It has been recorded in cool, wet high-elevation grasslands, often where the soil and vegetation stay moist.
The back is dark brown, the sides are slightly more orange, and the orange belly shows some slate gray through the fur. Its coat is long and loose.
Specimens were recorded in the cool, humid high-elevation grasslands of Mount Caparaó. Records were more frequent in wet soils with dense bunchgrasses and bamboo; the account suggests this cover may provide nesting places.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
