This gerbil is recorded in parts of eastern Zimbabwe and central Mozambique. In a study of southern African species, it was associated with the wettest areas among the related gerbils compared.
The paper notes within-species coat-colour variation in Gerbilliscus, but does not give a distinctive colour for G. inclusus.
In the study’s southern region, this was the most moisture-associated of four species compared and was confined to the northeast, where mean annual rainfall exceeds 800 mm.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
