Mature males have a pair of tusk-like teeth projecting from the strongly arched lower jaw. Females and juveniles also have teeth, but these remain hidden beneath the gums and their jawline is less curved.
It is usually seen alone or in small groups. It dives deeply and uses suction to feed on small fish and squid.
