The Papua grassland melomys is a small rodent common in open habitats such as grassland in New Guinea.
Adult specimens from the study weighed 31–58 grams.
It was often trapped at night in kunai grassland. It was also recorded where grassland mixed with regrowth and gardens.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
