This shrew is recorded in the Canadian provinces of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. Published accounts associate it with wetlands, but its precise habitat requirements remain poorly understood.
Its coat is tricolored: the back is brown with less black, the flanks are paler brownish gray, and the underside is light gray.
A 2010 survey in northern New Brunswick captured one lactating female in a wetland. The authors suggested that wetlands surrounded by forest may support the shrew and connect suitable areas.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
