Alfaro's pygmy squirrel ranges from Central America into Colombia. It lives hidden in forest undergrowth, and little direct information is available about its diet.
ADW describes dwarf squirrels as having dark olive-brown backs, reddish-brown heads, and undersides ranging from pale gray to rufous.
Dwarf squirrels are described as shy, solitary, and active by day in forest cover. The only examined stomach contents for M. alfari were too finely divided to identify its food.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
