The Australian Masked Owl lives in forests and woodland edges and hunts small mammals at night. Its plumage occurs in pale, intermediate, and dark forms.
Its facial disc ranges from chestnut to white, and the plumage occurs in pale, intermediate, and dark forms. Females are markedly larger and generally darker than males.
It uses forests, woodlands, wooded waterways, and open country nearby. Tall trees with hollows provide nesting and roosting places, and pairs remain in or near their territories all year.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
