A very small storm petrel of the Southern Ocean, with a grey back, dark head and wings, and a white belly.
The head, neck and upper breast are dark grey; the back and upperwings are paler. The belly and underwings are white, with a black leading edge, square tail and short legs.
It forages in offshore subantarctic waters and is rarely seen close to mainland New Zealand.
