This fruit-eating bat ranges from Mexico to Panama in Central America. Research published under the older name Artibeus watsoni records it modifying young palm leaves into day roosts.
Its fur ranges from dark brown to gray or blackish; facial stripes are usually indistinct, and a fringe of hair marks the rear edge of the tail membrane.
At sites including Barro Colorado Island in Panama, it was recorded cutting and folding leaves of young black palms into boat-shaped day roosts.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
