An Asiatic wild ass. The appearance and behavior here describe the Persian onager subspecies in Iran.
In the Persian onager subspecies, the pale sandy-red coat has a brown back stripe edged in white and a darker stripe on the shoulder. Its winter coat grows longer and turns grayer.
Persian onagers feed on grasses, shrubs and herbs during the cooler morning and evening hours. A male may defend a good territory, while females may move among territories depending on conditions and mate preferences.
