The Southeastern Xanthurus Rat is a large rat from forests on the southeastern peninsula of Sulawesi. It has dark upperparts, buffy-white underparts, and a mostly naked tail that is white over its final two-thirds. The 2017 account reported three known specimens at publication.
It is large, with long, fairly soft fur and long black guard hairs. The dorsum is brownish black with brown-tipped hairs; the venter is buffy white, becoming more yellowish on the neck and chin, and is not sharply separated from the dorsum. The feet are dark above, with white digits and undersides. The nearly naked tail is dark at the base and white over its final two-thirds.
The account records it in tropical lowland evergreen and montane rain forests. It may also occur in disturbed habitat, but the HMW account presents that as a possibility rather than a confirmed habitat record.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
