This small grassquit occurs in humid woodland and forest edges. It is recorded from several South American countries; in Bolivia, only one vagrant specimen from Amazonian forest in northern Santa Cruz is reported.
The Birds of Bolivia account gives a length of about 10.5–11 cm and describes a relatively long, deep bill.
It occurs alone, in pairs or small flocks in humid woodland and along forest edges.
In Bolivia, a single specimen is known from Amazonian terra-firme forest in northern Santa Cruz; the account treats the species there as a vagrant.
