A mountain-breeding pipit whose gray head and pale pink chest stand out in breeding plumage.
Adults in breeding plumage have a gray head with a white eyebrow and a pink wash from throat to chest. The pink is stronger in males; winter plumage loses much of the gray and pink.
After breeding, water pipits may gather in groups. Migrants and wintering birds feed in groups beside water, and winter roosts can be in reed beds.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
