The African Triaenops afer was formerly treated as a subspecies of T. persicus, but a later taxonomic revision recognizes it as a separate species. It is recorded widely in eastern Africa.
African specimens called T. persicus afer in the 1982 account varied: some had brown backs with little gray and grayish-buff undersides; others had reddish-brown backs and slightly paler undersides.
The IUCN assessment reports it generally in riparian habitats within low-lying woodland and savanna.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
