This small bird lives on Java, Indonesia. A 2015 taxonomic study retained Java's Locustella montis as a species and included the Timor population as a subspecies. This entry describes the Java specimens examined in that study.
In Javan adults, males and most females have heavy streaking below. The upperparts are dark, the flanks a rich warm brown, and the broad undertail-coverts have pale tips. The crown is also very dark.
The species account lists thickets and grass in high-mountain, semi-open habitat and classifies the bird as terrestrial.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
