The Bismark Masked Flying Fox occurs on islands east of New Guinea. A 2014 phylogenetic study treated P. ennisae from New Ireland as a separate species, clarifying the species boundary of P. capistratus.
Unlike the related P. ennisae from New Ireland, P. capistratus specimens from New Britain were described with a distinct white-and-dark facial mask.
A 1992 conservation-conference report says the bat then called Pteropus temmincki capistratus roosted alone or in male–female pairs.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
