A small, social bird widespread south of the Sahara. A Southern African account describes flocks feeding on grass seeds in grassy and scrubby places and along woodland edges.
The Southern African account describes adults with earth-brown upperparts, a blackish head, face, throat, and upper breast washed with bronze-green, and finely barred flanks.
In the Southern African account it uses mixed grass and scrub, woodland edges, coastal scrub, and old cultivated land; flocks climb grass stems to take seeds.
