Martes caurina occurs in western North America and on Pacific coastal islands. Its coat varies in color; in Alaska it feeds mainly on voles and mice and is most often associated with mature and old-growth evergreen forest.
The coat ranges from pale yellow to dark brown, and the feet and legs may be blackish. Fur around the muzzle is gray to light brown, with a short dark line extending from each eye corner onto the forehead. Animals on Admiralty Island tend to be yellowish orange.
In Alaska, voles and mice are major foods, and Pacific martens are most often associated with mature and old-growth evergreen forests. In Southeast Alaska, they use cavities in large old-growth trees for dens and resting sites.
