The Polynesian Imperial Pigeon is a large pigeon still recorded on Makatea in French Polynesia. Adults have a pale grey head and green-glossed blue back, and they feed on fruit.
In adults, the head, neck, chest, and front of the belly are pale grey, while the back, wings, and tail are blue with a green sheen. The black bill has a pale enlarged base, and the legs are dark red. The sexes look alike in plumage.
It eats fruit. Once recorded mainly in dense forest, it is now also found in secondary forest and gardens. On Makatea it has been reported to help native forest spread across mined areas by dispersing seeds.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
