This rodent occurs in Angola. A 2021 study moved it from Myomyscus to Mastomys and reported tails about the same length as head-and-body in 17 Namba specimens.
In 17 Namba specimens, tail length was 91–117% of head-and-body length, or about the same length.
A survey recorded the species southwest of Cassongue, at a site described as grassland and degraded miombo woodland.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
