The Bridled Tern is widespread across tropical and subtropical seas. It forages at patches of floating seaweed and may rest on floating objects at sea.
Breeding adults are patterned in black, brown, white, and gray, with a long, deeply forked tail edged in white.
It forages for fish, squid, and other prey around Sargassum patches in tropical and subtropical seas. It nests in noisy colonies on small islands, using spaces under rocks, crevices, or dense vegetation.
At sea it may rest on buoys, floating seaweed or debris, and the backs of sunning sea turtles.
