This sunbird is recorded in wooded and tall-scrub habitats in southern Africa. A 1997 atlas describes the male as having a broader red breast band and a heavier bill than the smaller related species.
The atlas distinguishes adult males from the Lesser Double-collared Sunbird by a broader red breast band and a more robust bill.
The account records the species in moist wooded habitats and tall scrub, especially edges and canopy, as well as coastal, montane, and riverine scrub, Protea savanna, parks, and gardens.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
