Adults have a green forehead and crown, an orange-red throat patch, and yellow-green lower back and upper tail-coverts. Females have a blue-green tinge on the forehead and cheeks; juveniles lack the throat patch and have pale brown bills.
Outside the breeding season it is usually seen in pairs or small family groups; larger groups may gather at favored feeding sites. It also uses forests, forest edges, tall secondary growth, and palm groves.
