This rat is recorded in wetlands and flooded grasslands on the plateau of southern Brazil. It is smaller than related species in its genus and has a noticeably grayer, darker coat.
The original description reports smaller external and skull measurements than in related species, with conspicuously grayer and darker fur.
Specimens were collected in open palustrine sites on the Meridional Plateau, including swamps and flooded grasslands. The authors describe mainly soggy soils dominated by Eryngium pandanifolium and Baccharis, and identify the species as an inhabitant of open palustrine systems.
