A deer native to China. After it disappeared from the wild there, reintroduction has reestablished wild populations in China.
Its reddish coat turns grayer in winter. It has a long, narrow head, widely spaced hooves and backward-pointing antlers in adult males.
It favors marshes and swims well, sometimes staying submerged up to its shoulders in warm weather. Herds may be all-male or females with young; during the breeding season, males seek to form a harem.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
