The South Island robin lives on New Zealand's South and Stewart Islands and often forages on the forest floor.
Adult males are dark grey-black from head to chest, with a white to yellowish-white belly. Females are grey above and have a smaller, less sharply defined white chest and belly area.
It forages on the ground in forest and scrub. Males defend territories, and unpaired males may sing for long periods. Along walking tracks, birds may approach a person who is sitting quietly.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
