This small manakin lives in lowland forest around the Amazon region. Males hang upside down from branches and twist rapidly from side to side during courtship.
An adult male has a golden crown and nape with a red median stripe, rosy-rufous upperparts, and mostly olive wings. In the northern subspecies the cap is paler and the red stripe is less prominent.
It lives in lowland rainforest and feeds on small fruits and insects. A male displays on a branch within hearing distance of other males, hanging downward and twisting rapidly from side to side.
