A 2021 study separated this species as the new genus Serengetimys. It reports a white spot behind each ear and most records from northern Tanzania and southern Kenya. The Mammal Diversity Database now lists Serengetimys pernanus.
There is a conspicuous white patch of fur behind each ear.
The species is reported from grasslands with Acacia–Commiphora woodland and from edaphic grasslands shaped by local soil conditions.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
