The UKC standard says the Collie’s exact origins are unknown, though the Scottish Highlands are generally accepted as its home. For centuries, dogs of this type herded and guarded sheep.
[1]Rough and Smooth varieties
AKC and UKC describe Rough and Smooth as two coat varieties of the Collie, alike apart from their coats. In its 2026 nomenclature, the FCI assigns separate standard numbers to Rough Collie and Smooth Collie.
[1]A wedge-shaped head and two coat types
The Collie has a long, clean wedge-shaped head and a lithe, active build. Rough Collies have a long coat with a straight, harsh outer layer and soft undercoat; Smooth Collies have a short, hard, dense coat. AKC and UKC standards allow sable, tricolor, blue merle and white.
