Background and human relationship

A German hunting spaniel. UKC describes its recreation by hunters in the 1880s using remnants of an older hunting type and working spaniels, followed by recognition in 1903. It is also known as Deutscher Wachtelhund.

Build and coat

A medium, strong-boned and muscular dog with long drop ears. Hair is short and fine on the head but thick and wavy or curly on the body, with protective undercoat and feathering. Its build and coat differ from shorthaired pointers and small companion spaniels.

Colour and comparisons

UKC describes solid brown and brown roan or ticking, including white ground with brown patches. Brown ranges from lighter to darker shades. Dark-looking hair in a photograph is not enough to establish black; ground colour and the distribution of white are separate observations.
