[3]Background and role
A farm dog around Bern, Switzerland, used for guarding, draught work and moving cattle. Clubs promoted breeding and standardisation of the longhaired tricolour type in the early twentieth century.

A substantial, above-medium-sized working dog with a long coat. Hair length helps compare the Swiss mountain breeds.
[1]Coat and comparisons
Black ground colour combines with tan on the face and limbs and white on specified areas. Distribution matters as well as the three colours.
