The AKC history account says smaller Smooth Fox Terriers became valued ratters on American farms, and breeders used these dogs with toy breeds to develop the Toy Fox Terrier.

The AKC standard describes the breed as “truly a toy and a terrier.” It is a small, balanced dog with a nearly square outline, athletic ability, agility and strength.

The fine, glossy, smooth coat lies close to the body. The standard lists black-and-tan, chocolate-and-tan, white-and-black and other patterns in which the body is more than half white, with a predominantly solid-colored head.
