[3]A scenthound for mountain tracking
The UKC traces the breed to early hunting dogs called Bracken, developed into a lighter scenthound for leash-led tracking in mountainous regions. It describes the breed as a traditional companion to professional hunters and gamekeepers in the Bavarian mountains.
[1]A mobile, medium-sized build
The build is medium-sized, fairly light and mobile, slightly longer than tall, with the rear standing a little higher than the shoulders. A deep chest, muscular back and loin, and light, springy movement are described in the UKC standard.
[1]A dense, harsh short coat
The coat is short, dense and harsh to the touch. The UKC standard lists fawn, red, reddish grey and brindle among its colours. Hair is finer on the head and ears and longer and harsher on the belly, legs and tail; the muzzle and ears are dark, and the back generally has deeper colour.
