An American terrier developed for ratting

The UKC describes the Rat Terrier as an American breed developed from terriers brought by working-class immigrants from England. Its ancestors probably included Fox Terriers and other working terriers. It has worked as a ratter and squirrel hunter; UKC recognition dates to 1 January 1999.

An active small-to-medium working dog

The UKC standard describes a muscular, active small-to-medium hunting terrier, with a preferred body-length-to-height ratio of 10:9. It lists natural full tails, natural bobtails and docked tails.

A smooth short coat with white in the pattern

The coat is short and smooth. The UKC standard allows solid white, other colours with white markings, or coloured patches on white; merle and brindle are not accepted. Some white is required, of any size and in any location; ticking may occur in predominantly white areas.
