The UKC standard gives a height of about 8–12 inches. It is small but sturdy and muscular; the breed’s history includes vermin control on farms.

The short, dense coat ranges from medium-hard to smooth and has a sheen. UKC accepts bi- or tricolour patterns that always include white; merle is a disqualification.
