[2]A history presented as a theory
The UKC standard says the breed is believed to descend from dogs brought to the New World by Spanish conquistadors and crossed with native Mexican dogs. It also says early American settlers brought Leopard dogs from Mexico to hunt bear. The standard presents this origin as a belief, not a proven pedigree.
[1]A tree dog built for stamina
The UKC standard describes a powerful, agile, medium-to-large tree dog with a body slightly longer than its height. It has been used on small game as well as large game such as bear and cougar; the standard emphasizes stamina, prolonged tracking and holding treed game at bay.
[1]Leopard spotting over a dense double coat
The coat is smooth and close, with a rough outer layer and a fine, woolly undercoat. The UKC standard lists leopard spotting in yellow, black, brindle, red, blue or mouse color; white points or a collar are allowed, but white must not cover more than one-third of the dog.
