[3]A native dog of northeastern Russia
The FCI standard describes the Yakutian Laika as a native dog of northeastern Russia developed by Indigenous communities for sledding and hunting. Its historical account cites archaeological discoveries as evidence of dogs being used for those roles in the region about 8,000 years ago.
[1]Sledding, hunting and transport
The FCI standard lists sledding and hunting as its uses. It also describes watching homes, herding reindeer and transporting goods in the severe conditions of the Far North.
[1]A thick double coat and colours including white
The FCI standard describes a medium-sized, strong and compact dog whose body is about 10–15% longer than its height. Its medium-length, coarse topcoat and dense undercoat form a mane, leg furnishings and a tail fringe. The standard allows white with patches in two or three colors and lists solid colours other than white as disqualifying.
