Background and human relationship

A large Swiss dog used for guarding, hauling and livestock work. Preservation gained momentum after a 1908 exhibition, followed by Swiss recognition as a separate breed in 1909 and a breed club in 1912.

Build and coat

Heavy bone and muscle are paired with endurance and agility despite its size. Similar colour to Bernese and other Swiss mountain dogs does not erase its separate identity; build and outline are useful comparisons.

Colour and comparisons

Black ground carries symmetrical reddish-tan and white markings. Tan occurs on cheeks, brows and legs, with white on the blaze, chest, feet and tail tip. The arrangement and boundaries of the three colours are informative.
