[2]A long-haired Dutch herding dog
The UKC standard describes the Schapendoes as part of a group of long-haired herding dogs known in the Netherlands. After World War II, the breed was rebuilt from a few remaining dogs; the standard records a first breed club in 1947, a standard in 1954 and UKC recognition in 2006.
[1]A light, enduring herder
Although medium-sized and lightly built, the UKC standard describes the Schapendoes as having endurance, mobility and speed. It is characterized as an attentive herding dog with springy movement and notable jumping ability.
[1]A long coat with a topknot and beard
The coat is dense, double and lightly waved, measuring about three inches over the hindquarters. It forms a topknot, mustache and beard. All colors are permitted, with blue-grey to black preferred.
