[2]The Cocker developed as a distinct U.S. type
The UKC describes the U.S. Cocker as a distinct dog developed from early English Cocker imports. Its name refers to woodcock hunting, and the UKC recognized it separately from the English Cocker in 1947.
[1]A compact, square bird-flushing spaniel
The UKC standard describes it as the smallest of the hunting land spaniels, with a compact, nearly square body. Its field role is to flush game birds from cover; the standard also notes its long ears and muscular hindquarters.
[1]Silky feathering and several color groups
The coat is short and fine on the head, medium on the body and feathered on the chest, ears, abdomen and legs. UKC lists black including black-and-tan, ASCOB (any solid colour other than black), parti-colour and sable. Roans are parti-colours; a primary colour covering 90 percent or more is disqualifying, and tan trim is limited to 10 percent.
